Tsukuba Science City

Tsukuba is designed as Japan's science and technology city. It hosts over 60 public and 200 private research organizations. About half of Japan's research funding is spent in Tsukuba City, and about 20,000 PhD scientists are employed here. The city is named Japan's robotics, nanotechnology, and digital-bio research hub. It is also designated as an experimental area for the Japanese government's Super City initiative . The University is pivotal in driving research and real-world implementation.

Tsukuba hosts numerous research institutes as Japan's science city. Yet, it also preserves its rich traditions and local heritage with attractions such as Mt. Tsukuba and Tsukubasan Shrine. Many festivals are held in the city throughout the year.

Close to Tokyo

Tsukuba is about 60km from central Tokyo, with the Tsukuba Express train connecting Tsukuba with Akihabara in 45-56 minutes. Tsukuba offers affordable college-town living with the convenience of a major city less than an hour away.

Tsukuba is one of Japan's most international cities. About 12,000 of its 250,000 residents hail from overseas, and around 2,200 of them study at the University. The city offers extensive multilingual services for residents, making it a welcoming atmosphere for international students.

Affordable Housing

All incoming international students are guaranteed on-campus accommodation for their first year in Tsukuba. Dormitories start at around 15,000 yen per month, excluding utility fees. Shared house-style dormitories are a popular option. The campus and surrounding areas offer various dining and recreational facilities. After the first year, many students move to private apartments with low rents and small deposits.

Premier Support to Athletes

The University of Tsukuba boasts top-tier sports facilities and internationally recognized staff. Notable figures include former gymnastics coach Professor KATO Sawao, head judo coach Professor OKADA Hirotaka, and Kendo coach Professor KODA Kunihide. Students and graduates of the University have garnered about 140 medals in the Olympics and Paralympics, including those from the predecessor schools.
